Wilmette 10U Girls  vs  Team Illinois 10U Girls  -  Jan 05, 2003

The first game of the New Year for the Wilmette 10U girls was certainly an exciting game and presented a challenge for the girls in many ways.  After coming off a terrific win in the Crystal Lake Tournament it appeared that the girls hadn't lost a beat when less then 3 minutes into the first period Pammy Enriquez centered the puck from deep in the corner that hit Jessica Merritt's blade for a quick flip into the weak side of the Team Illinois' goalie.  However, beyond the initial explosion, the girls seemed to have a hard time getting it together for the rest of the game.  We were knocking at the door but couldn't get the puck in.

Team Illinois continued to press our defense into committing sooner, thus resulting in some breakaways.  Kelsey Ingram handled most of them with tenacious poise and determination to stop the shot.  At every opportunity TI was camping out in front of our goal.  This kept our defense busy pulling up stakes as TI centered pass after pass.  One of those passes from the LW boards went through a crowd of skaters untouched to TI's RW who delivered a shot that just went under Kelsey's stick as she dove to stop it.  With less then 5 minutes to go in the 2nd period TI had a 2 on 0 break away.  Kelsey's initial reaction stopped the shot but the rebound got away and into the on coming TI player, who flicked it into the goal.

The girls tried to turn up the heat in the third period with multiple shots on goal, but no reward.  Colleen Smith had a blazing shot from the blue line that seemed to disappear under the goalie and out the other end, but not before the whistle blew the play dead.  With less then 2 minutes remaining Wilmette pulled their goalie in an effort to tie the game, but time ran out and the final score was Team IL  2  and  Wilmette 1.

The Battle of the Brothers - Part Deux

The 'Brothers' were unable to let well enough alone after the girls' earlier victory.  No they came back for more,  and more.  The game started off pretty even but it was clear there would be no prisoners in this one after Hailey Arnold and Mackenzie Martin sandwiched the young Ben Brower and left him sitting on the ice.  Shortly thereafter,  Cathleen Brower took down the young Jesse Arnold.  Clearly the girls had agreed to focus on the other brothers instead of their own.   The rest of the team, however, knew the best way to retaliate and the boys scored first.   Barrett McBride was busy weaving in and out of boys,  a skill she will use later in life, only to be stopped by the post.   After the second score by the boys,  by Ben Brower, we noted Cathleen congratulating him on the score (at least that's what we hope she was saying).  The girls were getting desperate now,  when Grace Dickinson took the puck down the ice and shot.  Jessica Merritt tipped it in on the rebound.  Katy Ratty had a near break away!   She's really getting good at this.  Great work!!  Jesse Arnold attempted a hook on Pammy Enriquez but Pammy continued, oblivious to Jesse's attempts to harrass her.   Jesse later attempted the same move on Lauren Angley to no avail.   Late in the third period there was a scrum in front of the net.  Somehow in the milieu,  Jesse Arnold put the puck in.   Fortunately,  that put an end to individual revenge by the brothers after both Brower and Arnold had scored.   The girls though were very cranky.  Finally, Barret cleared a nice one to Hailey Arnold who put it in to make the final score 2-3.   Lauren Taylor and Katie Theiss played well in supporting their respective lines.  Goalie Kelsey Ingram made 16  saves in this hot game.  Stay tuned.  Will there be part Trois?

Wilmette vs Winnetka Mite Silver 10/23/02
WILMETTE, IL      Wilmette U-10 girls on home ice against the Winnetka Mites Silver team played to a 2-1 victory Wednesday October 23 at 6:40 pm. The coaches George Arnold and Dan Dickinson gave a locker room pep talk saying we are bigger and stronger and with winning passing we will win!! The girls proved the coaches right with 12 shots on goal to Winnetka's 8. Kelsey Ingram again showing great agility in the goal and a good role model for our BUG Clare Kennedy. Haley Arnold scored the first goal with an assist from Katie Theiss on her brothers team to start us off. The competition between brother and sister continued with them taking the puck to the boards in a pile up later in the game. The 2nd goal was by Lauren Taylor again with an assist from Katie Theiss. Our own Katie Ratty did an awesome job with the face off getting possession quickly. She was playing against a fellow second grader Gabriel Staub from Northfield. We were happy to see Colleen Smith back on the ice with the team. Barrett McBride had a number of breakaways and shots on goal only to have the puck deflected. One of these was a pass off from Mackenzie Martin. Good passing by Jessica Merritt, aggressive offensive plays by Pammy Enriquez, and excellent defense seen by teammates Lauren Angley and Grace Dickinson made for a winning combination. Kathleen Brower also had a brother on Winnetka's team, helped Wilmette to victory but wore a green helmet showing her brother support.

The U-10 girls win against the boys was great! Almost better than the win however, was after the game they were invited to practice with the U-12 girls team and the New Trier Girls Hockey Team. What a sight to see over 50 hockey skating girls on Wilmette ice .
